It’s all about defense

July 06, 2010

An old soccer saying says that offense might win the game, but defense wins the championship. The same goes for companies. A good security concept keeps you in the game.
The 1970 semi-finals in Mexico: In one of the games of the century, Germany scores three goals against the Italians who are known for their defense. Nevertheless, the German team does not win the game. Tired from the heat, their defense falls apart during the 120 minutes of the game, letting the Italians score four goals. The final score: 3 to 4 with Germany in third place.
The 1986 semi-finals - same place, same goal, Germany vs. France. Germany takes the lead early on in the game and holds it for 90 minutes. Just before the end of the game, Völler scores another goal, making it 2 to 0 and putting Germany in the finals.
Security is important, both in soccer and at companies. Data needs to be stored securely and business processes cannot be disrupted. Platforms need to be stable and protected from third-party access. And governance means being obligated to maintain an overview of your security measures at all times and being able to take responsibility for them.
Let's be honest. Germany became World Champion in 1954 and 1974 even though they had to face the biggest soccer nations with the best offense in the world at that time, Hungary and Holland. And they did it because their defense was able to guard the goal from the other team using passion and cleverness until the final whistle.
